Mōrena whānau,

It is a pleasure to be writing the leadership pānui this morning.

Our school values are what we want to live and breathe so for each Leadership Pānui we have decided to write about one. This week let’s revise my favourite… Whakawhanaungatanga. It’s all about relationships. Whaka- (process of), whanaungatanga (relationships).

Looking at our whakawhanaungatanga symbol it is based on the unfurling frond of the native silver fern, the circular shape of the koru conveys the idea of perpetual movement. Koru traditionally represent ‘new life’ and this symbol shows the positive relationships we hope everyone will build within our school and wider community.

So what does Whakawhanaungatanga look like at RSS? I see Whakawhanaungatanga everywhere in our school. Yesterday morning at Uenuku (our 4 year old transition programme) our parents and students welcomed the newest whānau. RSS is a big whānau! RSS is one big family who supports each other! At lunchtimes we have children of all ages playing with one another and learning together through play. We learn at RSS how to relate to others positively, helping each other feel happy and valued. Having buddy classes provide role models and opportunities for other children to lead positive social actions such as sharing. Each day I see children holding strong relationships full of trust and sincere care with not just their classroom teacher, but all teachers and staff at our school. Lastly, I want to highlight an example of whakawhanaungatanga that is currently happening in my class. We have parents who come in to class in the morning and read stories to not only their own child but other students and preschoolers. As Troy always reminds me… It takes a village to raise a child.

The week ahead:

  • This Wednesday school hoodie sales open. More information will be out soon.
  • On Thursday, Rooms 1, 3, 4, & 5 are off to visit the Woodville Marae. Thank you to all the parents coming to help. The children couldn’t have the experience without your support.

Other information and reminders:

Digital Safety

As many of you may be aware of, there is a nasty “Momo challenge” on social media. Follow the link to find out more: Momo Challenge Information on Stuff. We all need to keep our children safe and wish to take the following actions around this.

We do not want to be talking about the “Momo Challenge” around the school but encourage children to talk to their parents at home. We understand it is natural for children to be curious therefore please help them discuss this at home making sure they tell an adult straight away if they come across this online so that the video can be reported.

On a nicer note…
