Kia ora koutou!

Welcome back everyone to Russell St School for 2019! I trust you all have had a great summer so far and managed to put some time aside to be with family and friends over the Christmas and New Year period. We are super excited for school to get underway which is tomorrow, Tuesday January 29. Here are a few reminders for you.

Pōwhiri – as is our custom at RSS we welcome new children and their families to our school with a pōwhiri. This will take place shortly after 9am tomorrow. Everyone is welcome to come along and be a part of this event.

Meet the Learner – This is a thank you to all of the parents, whānau and children who made the time to come in to school last week for a Meet the Learner conference. Overall we have found this a valuable process but we welcome your feedback on the initiative so we can fine tune it for future years. Any feedback can be shared with the classroom teacher.

School Uniform and Religious Education Reviews – The board are currently undertaking 2 significant reviews; School Uniform and Religious Education. If you attended a Meet the Learner meeting last week you were given a survey for each of these. Please return these to the school office. For those of you that weren’t able to be at the Meet the Learner, these surveys will come home to you this week.

School Donations & Activity Fees – These can be paid at any time. The activity fee is $10 a term or $40 for the whole year. The school donation is a voluntary donation but one that greatly contributes to the opportunities we can offer at RSS for your children. This is set a $200 a year for one child or $350 a year for 2 or more children. You can pay via our school website, online into the school back account (12-3143-0398304-00) or in person at the school office.

Pool – The pool has now been fully repainted along with various other maintenance work that can only be done when the pool is empty. It is being filled up as I type so we are hopeful to have swimming up and running by the end of the week once the correct chemical balance has been reached. Pool keys will be available soon.

Building – The remodelling of Rooms 6 & 7 and the outdoor toilets is still a work in progress. Please be aware of the health and safety risk when you are in at school. Due to this Nic and John’s class is working out of Pātikitiki (the Art Space) and Mel and Bianca’s class are currently in Rm 2.

Stationery – If you haven’t already done so please jump onto to find the right stationery list for you. Teachers would very much appreciate these were ready to go on day 1.

Hats – Don’t forget hats are compulsory this term. If you need one just pop into the office with your $15.

New School Times – Don’t worry, the start and finish times have not changed but we have revamped the bells times slightly for during the school day. This ties in with the play first, eat second initiative. As such the day is structured as follows:

8.55am-10.30am: First Learning Block
10.30am-10.50am: Play
10.50am-11.00am: Eat
11.00am-12.35pm: Second Learning Block
12.35pm- 1.15pm: Play
1.15pm-1.25pm: Eat
1.25pm-3.00pm: Third Learning Block

That’s it for now. If you have any questions just get in touch. See you tomorrow!

Ngā mihi nui, Nick
